Infographic: How Did You Get So Many Followers?

I thought I would start dabbling in some infographics and try it out. I know for me, a big thing that people ask me is how I have so many followers. Now, mind you, I do not have an insane amount of followers, but it is enough for others to ask, especially business owners.

It is important to try to join and connect with your followers on several social networks, instead of one. In fact, it is not unusual to find that a follower might prefer using one social network over another one. Making that extra effort to engage with your followers on any social network means you have made yourself more willing to connect with them. So as the old saying to not put all your eggs in one basket… try putting your eggs in several baskets when it comes to social networking.

  6. I spent hours working with twitter and facebook, I worked really hard but did not work smart at all.

Now I am seeing much better results just by asking the right questions which garner users to reply and interact. I do not understand why it took me so long to learn it!

    Nice blog btw.

  10. Interesting foray into infographics – simple and effective.

If you’re really interested in learning more about it, check out The Visual Display of Quantitative Information by Edward Tufte. It is not necessarily easy reading, but it is widely considered the seminal work on the subject.

That said, it may be a bit dated now due to the greatly enhanced graphics capabilities that we all have at our fingertips, but the concepts contained within are timeless.

  11. Most people probably don’t know how good social media can be for their business, and many don’t realize how effective social media is. Without a way of measuring the success of social media, they are blindly using that form of communication without realizing the effect it has with their customers.

  17. Hi Nile,
You have excellent headline ! :-)

Social media is a place to do business but it is always good to build relationship first because people will come to you to know more about your business when they already know you :-)

Yes, i agree to get more followers, we need to get ourselves active in more social networking sites. Although it is very time concuming but everything will come a little simpler when we know how to manage our time well. I wasted a lot of time when I first started

    Thanks for sharing, Nile :-)

Instead I’ve ventured into many different routes in promotions and SEO techniques to improve rankings and followers on my main blog and niche sites.

  19. I was very amazed in the metaphor used! Nile has just explained it so simple for us to see the whole picture – why she’s got so much followers that others. Site owners must go the extra mile by reaching out to different social networks to connect with more visitors.

  20. I agree that it is good to have multiple social network profiles which give you a multiple options to connect with your friends and followers.

  21. I like it – especially since you’ve made it nice and BIG! Seriously, I agree about the value of diversifying our social media efforts. The problem is always time – writing for my blog, marketing and creating product – which of course you have to market. One of my big goals for this year is to get to the point where I can start outsourcing so I can focus on product (writing) because that’s where my heart is and why I started this trip in the first place.

  22. Hello Nile

Someone else might come along and know more than you is a great reason why not to call my self an expert. I have found in life there is always someone who know more than I do. Early in my business life I heard the following definition of an expert: “X”, the mathematical unknown, and
“Spurt”, a drop of water ejected with force. Therefore an Expert is an Unknown Drip Under Pressure. Nile you went to the heart of the matter with this tip,”If you are doing a good job, in time people will speak. You can definitely ask for feedback, but never beg.”

    Thanks

  25. Very nicely stated.

Making social connections takes time and personal commitment. Just like all relationships!

In a world where everyone wants to automate and reach the masses, it is interesting that personal relationships are still the key to success.

For many Social Networking is like walking down the street seeing strangers, and not talking to them!

  26. Hi Nile,
Yes, it is interesting how people tend to favor certain social channels over other ones. I am not a fan of Facebook even though I have to tolerate it due to sheer numbers and my target audience. however, I am a fan of Twitter and LinkedIn. But I have now found my new fav – Pinterest! It is awesome – photos and scrapbooking all in one. Used wisely, it could be a marketer’s dream!

You really do have to take people to the next level if you want to get anything out of social media. I have made some real friends and long-term business partners though Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn.

  28. Nile,

Love the infographic and would love to know what you used to create it.

As for the info on the graphic, you are, of course, 100% correct. Don’t put all your eggs in one basket. My only advice would be, for most people, especially in the beginning, don’t try to be an expert in too many Social Media sites at once or you will have no effect on any medium. Right now I’d say I focus mainly on FB and YouTube and am slowly ramping up my LinkedIn account with a hint of Twitter thrown in for good measure. I don’t put much into Twitter and don’t get or expect much out of it, so no stress. However, I don’t want to be completely ignorant of what’s going on with twitter, as people would start to question my “online marketing savvy”. And one day, I do hope to explode with Twitter, just not right now. Most of my visitors come from Social Media sites and NOT Google so Social Media can be a good place to stash those eggs!

    Take CAre,

  32. Good stuff–enjoyed this. There are many ways to get lots of followers–some interesting stuff going on out there. I think though, the key is to get followers who get engaged with you. That is tougher and needs to be organic and more slowly built by hard work. Also, infographics are so great on Pinterest–that site has legs!

  35. It definitely is a lot of work. But for me, it’s something I enjoy. I love networking – checking out others’ blogs, providing heartfelt and meaningful comments (don’t just do the “I’m following you. Follow me back.” How lame.), and learning all sorts of fun new skills.

The key is working first at your own content, I think. Then pretty soon people are reading because what you’re writing is interesting. After that, people ask to be featured on your site with an ad or a giveaway. Or when you ask if someone’s interested, they jump on it.

It seems cliche, but write what you enjoy, visit others who like the same things, comment, blog hop, and the rest will come.

  37. This is an interesting topic. I just listened to a podcast from Glenn Allsop of ViperChill.com. His approach is to connect deeply with just a few highly influential people, and spend the rest of his time creating his products. It’s worked for him, but then again, that’s him. I know it’s easier sometimes for me to connect than create, so I need to balance my time when I do connect across the networks.
