Anyone who posts that message gets an automatic unfollow from me. If some one follows me and they have that message on the first page of their tweets, I generally label them spammers and don't return the followers.

I can handle about 350 followers. I can't really follow any more than that and keep up with them. Twitter for me is generally about creating and maintaining relationships. I can't do that if I can't read the tweets of the people I want to create and maintaining them. I generally don't follow anyone with more than 1000 followers who follows me first. I generally label them as spammers and move on. (I've had to turn off notifications because I was getting too many of those notifications. They never reply to me. They don't appear to click through on links I post. They unfollow me if I don't return the follow. That's a spam follower. Twitter needs to punish those with 1,500+ followers who continue to follow when not followed first. Force them to put people on lists instead.)

Twitter seems to be heading in the "spam" direction more than anything. What ever happened to actual status updates; the main purpose of Twitter? Now, it has resorted to "get more followers here" and "buy this," etc.

I agree... but currently no one can really complain about it as Twitter has no policy on it. And frankly, it is free unless you want VIP status.
