I remember a couple years ago participating in a website that gave website owners that had extra space and bandwidth the ability to offer some of it to others. Usually this was done by the host of the domain allotting a subdomain or subfolder for another to use for their own website.
The site was called Pick-Me.net This of course was a movement that was started in hopes of allowing people the following:
- To connect with each other
- To get away from free hosts like Freewebs, Piczo, and Yahoo! Geocities, and similar site
- To try to encourage better web standards in design
After some time the site had issues with the mods with time constraint and the script was falling behind because of the popularity of the website. However, it hs once again risen and is accepting applications for both hosts and hostees.
The brilliant part of the site is its two main lists: hosts and hostees. A host can look at the list of hostees needing a website, while hostees can surf around and find a host with a domain name and requirements that suit their needs.
As a note, I offer 100MB diskspace/ 5GB bandwidth of free webspace at Pixelled.com. Hostees would receive a subdomain, email account (forwarder or can be used for popmail), have WordPress installed, and can put up links from text ads. However, I require a link to Pixelled.com, Webhost-Solutions.net, and Blondish.net in a very visible spot. I also require 4 visits a month to my blog here at Blondish (which means they should comment.) My only huge requirement is that I do not allow commercial based websites. Otherwise, I allow most websites.

I used to put my website up on that website to find hostees. It was before Sushi For Lunch, when I was running Glamstar.org. I used to love that place!

Yes, I was surprised to see it up and running again after the long hiatus. I had emailed and offered my own services, even to host it, but had not been replied to. It is nice to see it open, but I would have liked to see it open about a year or two ago with modifications. I am glad they found a way, but I had already written a php script to help out.
However, I can only help out now by plugging it. I hope others that are wanting to jump into hosting will do so.
Hi There; I just wanted to thank you for mentioning Pick-Me! in your blog, It is much appreciated to be mentioned and i’m pleased to see that some people still remember the old Pick-Me! days.
I just wanted to verify that Pick-Me! is no longer owned by Shadow/Dru, I myself was a user of Pick-Me! but I’d joined up about a week or so before it closed for hiatus; so when it never came back online, I made hostee.net and emailed the registered owner of the Pick-Me! domain to see if I could buy the domain off them; I never got a reply myself, so when the domain expired; I managed to backorder it and moved the hostee.net script to pick-me.net with some modifications.

It is unfortunate that they allow the domain expired. I had not known what had happened or I would have bought it. I knew quite a few people wanting to team together with me to make it happen instead of make a different site. I hope the new Pick-Me.net does as well.
