You Can Be A Social Media DJ

Posted by Nile | Posted in News | Posted on 21-05-2009 | 11

Blip ScreenshotI could not help it. When @morbidromantic sent an invite, I checked out Blip.fm and decided to join. Once I got in, I got so enthralled that here I am, writing about it here.

The site is a play where music meets social media. You can share your playlist or ‘DJ’ on your Twitter, Facebook, LiveJournal and a few other social media websites. I have been a bit addicted with it and have already favorited more than two dozen songs.

Also offered there are video clips of songs too. You can also follow those you know or follow people you happened to surf upon and liked their playlist. You can issue ‘props’ or for those familiar with forums, ‘karma’ points. You can also receive ‘props’ from another user if they like your stuff.

No, you cannot be a DJ, but you can sure feel like one, especially when your audience are the people who follow your updates across the social media world.

A Twitterwall for #WordPress Tweets

Posted by Nile | Posted in News | Posted on 20-05-2009 | 4

wpTweety Yep! It is true! There is a place for tweets from the trend topic WordPress. The most common hashtag association with the trend topics #wordpress and #wp. The site is called wpTweety. The site was created by Sergej Müller.

The site’s function simply finds those topics on WordPress and automatically posts them to the website. This is a brilliant idea. However, I do have one thing I suggest because I frequent the WordPress topic on Twitter. My only suggestion is that perhaps there should be the ability to post, kind of like a tweetchat and the twitterwall that wpTweety has. It would be a place that those in WordPress might even suggest as a secondary means from their support forums in the future.

Blogging and News

Posted by Nile | Posted in Blogging | Posted on 17-05-2009 | 6

I have been finding a lot of news stations using bloggers to speak up about situations. It is not just in blogging online, by in-person interviews too. In fact, their names is usually displayed with the title ‘Blogger’ too!

I am not against this, but I found it quite an eye-opener in how news is changing to allow bloggers to be credible sources. Of course, bloggers can contain a wealth of knowledge, but will we see some title say ‘Twitterer’ or ‘Facebook user’ for a person’s title. As fantastical as it sounded, I am laughing about the idea that they may include Blogging101 as a Journalism course.

I love blogging and social media. It is a great way to share the information to a larger audience that I have not gotten to share before when just a blogger. I am just concerned on how far the media will take blogging in conjunction to sharing the news. Will our news one day read in l33t speak, and our newspapers be extinct? I hope not. Not everyone has a computer or even access to the Internet. In fact, for some it is a pretty scary concept.

Hopefully if news becomes greener, we might have the quality news online that we had before, even it is comes from a blogger.

Twitter Twisted?

Posted by Nile | Posted in News | Posted on 13-05-2009 | 3

After the recent “fix” by Twitter to make things go more smoothly, Twitter changed some of their stuff back. They wanted to change it to allow members to only see the replies from followers, but not from the regular. At first I thought this meant that twitter would eliminate the general site timeline. It was not.

As MG Siegler of TechCrunch describes it

“So basically, you can see when someone is replying to someone else but only when they’re not really replying to them.”

Of course, as I mentioned already, Twitter took a bit of time again this week to change some of the settings back, so it is not so bad. I am sure Twitter is trying to do things in the best interest, but I have to say that if the focus of this simple one function site gets any more difficult, it may not be very appealing anymore. Already I have noticed glitches (via my “suspension” which was deemed a cache problem when I refreshed my computer over and over) and that the site seems a little more loaded with the features added. Of course, with any script, the more tables and code you add to make more functions, the more the load.

My hope is that Twitter tries to not do too much more. The site is blossoming ‘as is’ already and if they wanted to put some text ads, I am sure no one would complain as long as they were on the sidebar of the page.

I should not complain, but I actually enjoy meeting the new people that are on my stream. Sometimes through my followerers, I find others who I can connect with too.

What do you think about this?

BuddyPress Is Finally 1.0

Posted by Nile | Posted in News | Posted on 01-05-2009 | 2

With social media being big, WordPress MU, which allows users to install mutiple WordPress and connect with other bloggers has finally developed even more into Buddypress. Months ago, I plugged BuddyPress as I thought it was great. It is a great alternative for those tired of Facebook and MySpace or Ning, but with those who had a big love for using WordPress.

I am a little bit behind from the announcement of this over at the BuddyPress blog, but I remember that there were people really interested in it. Personally, I think this takes WordPress over the top and heads above most blog scripts (or for some of you, blog platform.)

I think this is great, especially for those people who were into doing forums. Not only can you do forums, but basically just about anything from blogging. It makes socializing a heck of a lot easier. With people who offer subdomain hosting, Buddypress might prove to be a better alternative. BuddyPress contains some great features like extended profiles, friends section, private messaging, groups, streams (kind of like a Facebook/ Twitter feature), forums, stats so you can track your blog, and more.

Get Paid to Hack

Posted by Nile | Posted in News | Posted on 22-04-2009 | 2

I have to admit, when seeing this, it really drew my eyes. There are people out there paid to hack. Now, most people associate hacking with something negative, but there are two sides to it. What I am talking about is companies hiring people to hack in order to tighten their computer security. IT Security is something highly sought after for companies today since most are turning to using computers and the internet to get the job done. In a way you would be one of the people involved in making sure your company is not hacked. You can even study online to be certified for the position, which makes it extremely convenient for people who work and have a family.

EC-Council IClass has classes in Security Fundamentals, Ethical Hacking, Penetration Testing, Computer Forensics, Disaster Recovery, and Secure Programming. All of these subjects are important for those in the tech field as it is always developing.

There are free first look classes that you can check out to see if you would be interested in taking the classes or to set you on the right path, like being a Certified Ethical Hacker. The IT field is one of the highest paying jobs. It would not hurt to give this site a look and see if it is something that you would be interested in, especially if you are still looking for a solid career.

Too Many Bosses, Not Enough Helpers

Posted by Nile | Posted in News | Posted on 22-04-2009 | 1

I am usually not one to rant. It has been months since the last time I have done this. Most of you know by my activities online, that one of the things I enjoy is anime, especially InuYasha. I took on extra help recently on one part of my InuYasha Fanfiction community, my drabble community at LiveJournal. When I mean help, I asked for particular things to be done, but the people involve decided to hop on and take over everything. I did not want that. I wanted to work in a team of people that could agree to do things. I did not get that. The layout messed with and other parts, and it was an argument. Of course, I would like certain things, but the point was missed. All I needed were two people, one to do announcements and one make graphics for that site. However, in return I got grief, backtalk, cussed at, and smeared, and things done to other parts of the site without asking or even a part of their original position.

When I would do something, it was like a push campaign. It was never enough and this was within 2 weeks. Of course it was active, but if people were joining just because they were friends with them and I was apparently stepping down (as they were falsely telling people), then that was the wrong reason to join. It should be active because the theme is something you can work with, not because of their affiliation with another person. That is something I have tried to make sure that is avoided and these gals thought that much of themselves. I have been blamed for being egotistical, but this stuff takes the cake. Who cares if they have won awards for their fanfics. Does it make them money? Does it give them national or international fame? The answer is no. It is just like the articles I write for people who believe gaining a ton of Twitter followers is the way to go.

It is merely entertainment, in the case of this particular incident and that concept was lost along the way. Like those bitter women at work who do nothing but complain about previous marriages gone awry.

So, I removed them from the position and they started a smear campaign. The one gal told people on her LiveJournal blog, that I threatened to remove her writing from my sites when I did not at all. I have not touched them nor will unless she decides to flame the website. It was extremely upsetting since I have had to limit my time online due to outside events, but catch up offline with other things. One thing that I expressed throughout the whole thing was that I was not stepping down and somehow this was presumed.

“Too many bosses in the kitchen and not enough helpers.”

My stepmother recalled that one for me, but cannot remember where or who originally said it, and it fit perfectly.

What I could not believe are the people so into drama and such… crap I had been in the fanfic world longer than those gals, and yet I am the bad guy every time.
