A few weeks ago, right before publishing my 5 Really Cool Hello Dolly Alternatives post, I created the Hello WP User Plugin. I’ve always been a fan of the Hello Dolly plugin. However, it’s always been used as a novelty. While it’s a great example of simple WordPress plugin development, it’s always been used for quotes.
There’s nothing wrong with that. In fact, some people log into their website and find it entertaining to see some quote in the top right hand corner. I just decided to create one that specifically addresses WordPress tips.
This originally came about when Michele Butcher (who has after I submitted Hello WP User, has submitted her own Hello Dolly alternative called Hello Security showed me the Hello Samuel L Jackson plugin that she was running on her website), and It got me thinking on how I could create a version that was useful. Of course, Hello Dolly is really simple to alter and can be used for a lot of things, but I like some things that can be practical, especially if it is for my readers and followers.
That being said, the Hello WP User plugin randomly rotates WordPress tips, from blogging, security, basic user tips, and more. I’ve placed it in GitHub and it’s also available in the WordPress Plugin Directory.
I’m actually open to adding more tips to the plugin. Here’s some of the lines that are randomly rotated in Hello WP User:
Don’t forget to backup your website.
Before upgrading themes and plugins, backup your website.
Have you secured your WordPress installation?
A WordPress security plugin is great for throttling bad bots and scanning for malware.
Blog what you know and love.
There are a lot more lines. This turns the Hello Dolly plugin concept from not just novelty, but also useful for the WordPress user.
Like I mentioned before, you’re welcome to suggest more tips to be added to the rotation. If you like the plugin, please rate Hello WP User 5 stars in the WordPress Plugin directory.
